The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is committed to providing a rich, educational and collegial rehearsal and performance environment for the musical development of its members and for the cultural benefit of the people of the metropolitan area.The MYO organization includes five symphonic orchestras, one string orchestra, a four-part vocal chorale and a three children’s choirs. The 2009-10 season will begin with a total membership of over 550 young people between the ages of eight and eighteen. The Nassau Co. ensembles rehearse on Tuesday evenings throughout the school year and the Suffolk Co. ensembles rehearses on Thursdays. All ensembles perform three or four times a year at concerts scheduled throughout the metropolitan area. For the past several years many of the high school-aged members have participated on the MYO summer tour, taking them to countries throughout Europe and the Far East.
The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York holds annual auditions in May & June for the following year. Additional auditions are held in September and throughout the year until all positions are filled. There is a $20 Audition Fee.
MYO ensembles have performed regularly at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. Local venues include Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Staller Center for the Arts as well as many school theatres.
Internationally, MYO groups have performed at the Shanghai Concert Hall, The Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, The Mozarteum in Salzburg, to name a few.
The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York held its third youth instrumental concerto competition finals round on February 7, 2010 . The six finalists performed. They were:

ELIGIBILITY
Participants must be under the age of 30 as of June 1, 2010. This is an international competition, open to all composers. There will be four age divisions:
Div I Ages 5-12
Div II Ages 13-17
Div III Ages 18-22
Div IV Ages 23-30
Winners may be selected from each Division.
COMPOSITION CATEGORIES
Works submitted should be for one of the following ensembles:
A. Childrens’ Choir (SA or SSA)
B. SATB Youth Choir
C. String Orchestra (Vln1,Vln2,Vla,Vcl, Bs)
D. Symphony Orchestra
(pc,fl, ob, cl, bsn/ trp,Fr hn, trbn, tb/ perc / strings / hp, pf optional)
RULES
1. Compositions may be handwritten or computer-generated.
2. Handwritten compositions that are illegible will not be considered.
3. A full score and a complete set of parts must be included.
4. Clear photocopies are acceptable. No materials will be returned.
5. A CD (digital or piano) rendition must be included with application.
6. Only one composition will be accepted per Category by the same composer.
7. Any one composition may not exceed 10 minutes in length.
8. The work may be one or more movements.
9. Submitted works may not be submitted again in subsequent years.
10. A completed, signed application must accompany each composition.
APPLICATION FEE
There is a $50 application fee for each composition submitted.
PRIZES
All finalists is each Division will receive a cash award and will have the composition recorded by one of the MYO ensembles. First place winners may have the composition performed at one of the MYO 2010-2011 scheduled concerts.
First Place $500; Second Place $300; Third Place $200
The judges reserve the right not to award a prize in any Division.
