Steven Cooney, bass trombonist with the MYO Principal Orchestra, Class of 2007. With a passion for music and the arts, Steven began his career in the second grade after deciding the trombone was going to be his instrument of choice; the start to his story. While in MYO Steven was All State and All Eastern and was recognized as the bass trombonist for the All USA Band by the MENC. He also held the bass trombone position in the Nassau Suffolk Jazz ensemble under the direction of William Katz.
Steven holds a degree in Bachelor of Music, Bass Trombone Performance from the Ithaca College School of Music, Class of 2011 where he studied with Jeffrey Gray. Steven has performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra alongside Branford Marsalis, at Carnegie Hall, and with countless other prominent artists. When not performing, Steven is in his studio taking on the role of songwriter, engineer, and producer. He enjoys bringing many artists’ ideas to life. Steven doesn’t believe that music should have boundaries, and is proud to perform across all genres of music, including classical, jazz, and hip hop.
His most recent project began shortly after graduating college, when he started composing his take on a modern symphony. Under the name “Cooney” he composed the first movement of which was released in July of 2017. The album is classically composed and includes nods to modern genres such as hip hop and pop and has been reviewed as a “modern masterpiece”. The next three movements are currently in production. He actively seeks talented musicians who are interested in performing his works worldwide. In addition to his music, Steven co-owns an event planning company, The Luxe Life Event Design, where he lends his audio-visual expertise to high-end events in Manhattan, NY.
